Asheville NC Travel Guide

Asheville NC Travel Guide

We recently took a mini-vacation to Asheville and had a great time. It was our first real vacation with our daughter, who is now a year old, and we’re already planning to come back. There’s a lot to do and it’s a great destination for couples, families, or weekend getaways with friends. Here is my Asheville NC Travel Guide to help you plan your Asheville vacation.

Asheville is a small city that is full of creative charm. There are art shops all over, tons of restaurants and breweries, and the mountains are just a short drive away. It’s the perfect destination for lovers of beer, art, and the outdoors.

Where To Stay

Renaissance Asheville – This is where we stayed and it was absolutely wonderful. The service was fantastic, the room was gorgeous, and the location was perfect. They even had champagne and chocolate covered strawberries in the lobby one night… how great is that? I’d definitely stay here again in the future.

The Omni Grove Park Inn – If you’re looking for a luxury, resort style hotel, this is it. I would absolutely love to stay here one day. This hotel is definitely a splurge but would be awesome for a special occasion.

Grand Bohemian – This is another luxury hotel that is located right outside of Biltmore. I’d love to stay at this one too. It’s a gorgeous hotel.

There are a lot of good hotel options in Asheville for any budget. You could also consider renting a cabin.

What To Do

Visit Biltmore – The Biltmore is the most popular attraction in Asheville and for good reason. It’s absolutely gorgeous and an incredible place to visit. There’s a lot to do: you can walk through the house itself, explore the gardens, walk the grounds, enjoy a wine tasting, eat at one of their restaurants, and so much more. They have seasonal events happening all the time too. It is a little pricey: almost $100 per adult ticket, which is really the only downside. If you’re able to swing it then you have got to check out Biltmore. I’ve been numerous times and I’m sure that I’ll visit again in the future.

Take a Brewery Tour – Asheville is craft beer city. They have more breweries per capita than almost any other city in the country. If you’re looking to try a lot of breweries on your trip, then a brewery tour would be perfect. Otherwise, try to pick one or two to visit during your trip if breweries are your thing. We love visiting breweries in Knoxville and enjoyed the ones we visited while in Asheville. I’ve listed some of my favorite Asheville breweries below.

Drive The Blue Ridge Parkway – The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most beautiful drives in America. It’s hard to beat the gorgeous mountain views. Their website offers a lot of travel itineraries to help you plan your visit.

Go Hiking – Asheville is the perfect destination for hiking enthusiasts. There are a ton of great hiking options near Asheville. A few that I have personally completed and would recommend are the Rough Ridge Trail off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Max Patch, and Mouse Creek Falls. There are so many hiking trails in this area that I hope to be able to hike in the future.

Walk Around Downtown Asheville – Our hotel was located right off of the main drag, Biltmore Ave, so we spent a lot of time walking around downtown. There are tons of shops, art galleries, restaurants, and breweries in this area.

Shop at The Grove Arcade – A unique building to visit for shopping and dining located in downtown Asheville.

Check out local art at the River Arts District – If you are an art lover then you need to check our River Arts Districts. You can visit working studios and galleries of local artists.

Shop the Outlet Mall – Another good option for shopping is the outlet mall.

Where To Eat & Drink

Sierra Nevada Brewery – This brewery is insanely cool and unlike any other brewery. First of all, it feels like you’re heading into the Biltmore with the drive up to Sierra Nevada. The building and grounds are totally worth exploring. They do offer guided tours of the brewery that you have to sign up for but I’d recommend it if you have time. We have only completed the self guided tour that was still very interesting. They have a great restaurant and an amazing outdoor area. You could spend an entire day here and love it. Highly recommend going here. Sorry about the novel, but this place is just that cool.

Double D’s Coffee & Desserts – This coffee shop in a double decker bus is recommended in almost every Asheville NC Travel Guide that I have come across. I haven’t been but it looks fun and has great reviews.

White Duck Taco Shop – Lots of unique taco choices at this restaurant. Another place that was highly recommended in other travel guides.

Wicked Weed – Awesome brewery in downtown Asheville. We visited for beers one afternoon and dinner the following evening. The restaurant was good but nothing special. I enjoyed the outdoor area more. Definitely an Asheville brewery worth checking out.

Buxton Hall BBQ – My choice for BBQ in Asheville. The food here looks so good and they have an in-house bakery.

Curate – A fancy tapas style restaurant that has amazing reviews. A friend of mine recommend this restaurant to me but we had our daughter with us so we stuck to more casual restaurants. Would love to eat here one day.

Sunny Point Cafe – Comfort food restaurant that is super popular. I’ve actually tried to eat here twice now but the wait time is always really long. Make a reservation or be prepared to wait a while. Looks great so I’ll have to go here one day.

12 Bones Smokehouse – Another great BBQ restaurant in Asheville. There are two locations and they are only open for lunch.

Biscuit Head – Do you love biscuits and gravy? Then you need to check out Biscuit Head. There’s usually a line out the door so be prepared to wait a little while.

French Broad Chocolate Lounge – The place to go for chocolate lovers. You can eat in the lounge or take your desserts to go.

There are so many more great restaurants in Asheville. This list is just the ones that I have been to/heard of/want to try.
