The past eight weeks have been both crazy and wonderful since we welcomed out baby girl into the world. I read so much stuff about caring for a newborn and thought I was well-equipped for the task. Motherhood is one of those things that you kind of just figure out as you go. However, I found some products that definitely helped me get by and wanted to share these must have baby products for first time moms to help you survive the brutal fourth trimester.
Must Have Baby Products For First Time Moms
Muslin Swaddle Blankets
Muslin Swaddle Blankets are probably on every must have baby products list because most babies just love to be swaddled. I’ve tried a few different variations of swaddles and sleep sacks but I kept coming back to the muslin swaddle blankets. Target has a great selection of muslin swaddle blankets.

Infant Gas Drops
I think every baby has gas problems at first while their digestive tract develops. Infant Gas Drops help the baby burp or fart to relieve the pressure of gas and (hopefully) calm them down. Because gas pains will make your baby cry. A lot. I started giving her gas drops at each feeding and it helped out a lot.
Haakaa Breast Pump
The Haakaa Breast Pump is a lifesaver for breastfeeding moms. You basically put it on the opposite breast that you are nursing from to collect the extra letdown. I’ve only used an electric pump twice because I found this to be so much easier. Highly recommend for any breastfeeding moms!
White Noise Machine
I started using this White Noise Machine religiously after she was about two weeks old. She sleeps sooo much better with it running. It think it helps her fall back asleep so she can sleep longer. It helps me sleep better, too, because I’m not focusing on every little noise that she makes.
Kyle decided to purchase a wipe warmer a few days after our baby girl was born. At first, I thought it was a frivolous purchase. Once I noticed it keeps our baby calm and happy during diaper changes, I was totally for it. Especially since we had her in the fall and temperatures started to drop. It’s also helpful for those middle of the night diaper changes so the cold doesn’t wake her up even more.
The Nose Frida Snot Sucker is amazing. Baby girl hated the bulb syringe sucker from the hospital. The Nose Frida is much easier to use. (It’s easier to clean, too!) Tip: Use saline spray to help loosen up any dry boogies before using the Nose Frida.
It’s recommended that newborns sleep in the same room as you for the first 6 months but sleep in their own space. I’ve been very happy with this bassinet from Amazon. The mesh sides are perfect since baby loves to move around while sleeping and smush her face on the side of the bassinet. It’s large but doesn’t take up a ton of space. It folds up easily too- perfect for travel.
Sleep And Play Outfits
Baby girl practically lives in sleep and play outfits. They’re just easier to use. I’m a big fan of Target’s Cloud Island Sleep And Play outfits because they are affordable and they have a zipper that zips up from the bottom. (This makes diaper changes really easy… which is what you want when you change sooo many diapers each day.)
Black Out Curtains
Black Out Curtains are definitely important to have to help promote good sleep for your sweet little baby. I always close the curtains, turn on white noise, swaddle, and sway my baby and most of the time she falls asleep pretty quickly. I found some cute black out curtains at Target that look great in her gray and white nursery. Check our Target’s selection here.
We received the Infant Optics Video Baby Monitor as a gift and it is excellent. Baby girl takes her naps in her crib in the nursery and I like having the baby monitor to check on her while she naps. This allows me to get stuff done around the house without worrying about her. I think a baby monitor is something every new mom should have.
The Boppy Pillow is another super popular baby product and for good reason. Your arms will get so tired from holding a baby while nursing or giving a bottle and the boppy takes away most of the weight from your arms.
Pacifiers are great for calming a baby and I love the Philips Avent Soothie Pacifiers. They are one piece so you don’t have to worry about it possibly breaking apart like the other types of pacifiers. I’d recommend having a few on hand because they will fall on the floor or you will lose them.
This was another product that I thought wasn’t necessary but it has been so helpful. Baby girl was NOT happy with her bottles and pacifiers being washed (by hand or in the dishwasher). I also didn’t want to boil water every time that I needed to sterilize something. So, my friend recommended that I buy the Munchkin Microwave Sterilizer and it has made sterilizing so easy.
I purchased this Baby Bathtub on Amazon and it has been perfect for bath time. It comes with a little hammock for the newborn stage. It’s less than $20 and 100% worth it to make bath time easier.
I hope my list of must have baby products for first time moms helps you survive caring for a newborn. Leave a comment below if you have any other product suggestions that helped you during the newborn stage.
