Using Google Flights to Find Deals on Airfare!

Have you ever used Google Flights? It is my go to for flight searching. First of all, it is very simple to use (thanks Google). More importantly, it is an incredibly helpful tool to find the best deals on flights.

Below are four tips for using Google Flights to find deals on airfare!

Be Flexible

Having flexibility in your schedule will be one of the biggest factors in getting a good deal. I’ll start by putting in my ideal dates, then look at the calendar to see the cheapest days to fly out and come back. If I have the ability to come back a day early or stay a day or two extra (which I’d obviously prefer) then I could save money by doing that. I like the regular calendar overview but there are also options for Flexible dates and Price graph if you want more details.

Use Larger Airports

The closest airport to me is McGhee Tyson, so that is where I’ll always start my search. The downside is that it’s a relatively small airport. Both Atlanta and Nashville are within 3 hours from me, so I will search those as well to compare prices. Google Flights makes it super easy to do that. I recently saved $500 on my flight to California later this year by simply deciding to fly out of Atlanta. (Note: You want to keep in mind other factors when deciding to fly out of another airport, such as time, gasoline, and parking to make sure it is worth your while.) I searched for flights from Nashville to Rome with the same dates as the example above, and it is actually cheaper to fly out from Knoxville.

Fly Into And Out Of Different Airports

Searching airfare at different airports is another extremely helpful tool that I utilize. I used this tip while planning my trip to the Pacific Northwest as well as my trip to Europe. Google Flights has a map option which easily lets you see pricing at nearby airports. This will not work for every trip because you may stay in one place the entire time. You will also need to consider transportation when you arrive. If I know I will be traveling around the area, this is a good tool to utilize first because it helps me plan my itinerary.

Discover Destinations

Do you need a vacation, but are not sure where to go? Discover Destinations is a super cool option that lets you choose the month, time frame, place (North America, Europe, etc), and interests and then it will give you a list of suggestions. I like to periodically look at this when I am bored and daydreaming about traveling. Two weeks ago I found flights to Europe for $600 round trip! Who knows, you may find a deal you can’t pass up on somewhere you have had on your bucket list.
